The Waterfront District will be breaking ground this summer for a new fitness center with a rock climbing gym. The new fitness space will be operated by Central Rock Gym (CRG), a leader in the indoor rock climbing industry with 19 existing or upcoming locations across New England and New York. First Columbia has announced plans to construct a nearly 20,000-square-foot indoor rock climbing, fitness and yoga facility at 545 River St. in Troy’s North Central neighborhood. “Central Rock Gym is one of the keystone properties in our strategy to connect North Central Troy with the downtown neighborhoods in an impactful way” said First Columbia Project Manager Nathaniel Bette. “In addition to the health & fitness space for CRG, we are also developing two multifamily projects and an affordable grocery store on this block. Together, these developments will add wellness, housing and food to Phase III of our Troy Waterfront Master Plan.”
Last Thursday, the city’s Planning Commission extended site plan approval for Central Rock Gym’s new facility, which includes both renovated space in the Flanigan Square building, a converted textile factory, plus a new 12,000-square-foot addition in the adjacent parking lot. The addition will wrap around the south and west sides of Flanigan Square and will connect to a planned extension of the city’s highly-acclaimed new Riverwalk. Central Rock Gym – Troy will feature high-bay indoor rock climbing on 45’ high walls as well as bouldering space, along with cardio machines, a weight room and a yoga studio. The fast-growing sport is now an Olympic event, and this new facility is being designed to host competitions. “We’re so happy First Columbia invited us to check out the scene here,” said Alex Peacher, Central Rock Gym’s Chief Marketing Officer. “CRG is excited to provide world class climbing facilities for the Capital Region and be a part of the downtown Troy scene.” Peacher said the terrain will feature 250 linear feet of bouldering and 45-foot-tall rope walls, that vary from steep overhangs to delicate slab climbs. There will be climbing-specific training stations with hang boards, campus boards, and several other complimentary cross training exercise stations. CRG will be offering pre-sale of membership soon at a discounted rate of $79/month for one year. The membership rate will be $89/month after opening. On the north side of Flanigan Square, First Columbia plans a 123-unit apartment complex for seniors on an empty lot at 549 River Street “A walkable neighborhood with access to affordable food is a major draw for senior housing, ” Bette said. “Bargain Grocery is going to be able to prepare food that can be delivered to the residents. We’re working out a nice synergy through thoughtful mixed-use development.” The goal of these developments is to introduce a variety of uses and tenants in the North Central neighborhood, which many consider to be underserved with a 43 percent poverty rate. The Bargain Block is part of an even larger transformation effort by First Columbia to reconnect downtown with North Central through a mile-and-a-half stretch of river frontage the company calls “The Waterfront.” Throughout the past two decades, the developer’s waterfront projects have included: fully renovating the historic Cluett, Peabody & Co. factory at 433 River Street, adding a rooftop event space and a street-level food hall; construction of a new 132-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel; and converting a former Fitzgerald Brewery bottling plant at 500 River St into a Life Storage facility that will include 1,000 climate controlled self-storage units. “The Collar City Bridge overpass and Hoosick Street create somewhat of a barrier between downtown and the neighborhood immediately to the north,” Bette said. “There are a lot of people working to better connect these communities, through art, parks and programming. First Columbia is adding to those efforts with well-planned mixed-use development.” About the Waterfront District: For information about the Waterfront, visit https://www.thewaterfronttroy.com Contact: Victoria Harris, marketing director of First Columbia (518) 213-1009 or [email protected] Comments are closed.
